NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS
- CERN is currently COVID-19 LEVEL 2 – Yellow. (https://hse.cern/covid-19-information)
- Update on the COVID19 Guidelines: https://hse.cern/covid-19-information
- Help trace COVID-19: act early - self-declare/self-evaluate on Tramed. Subscribe to CERN-wide self-testing.
Help keep CERN open: if you have cold, flu or COVID-19 symptoms, do not come on site, use Tramed.
- Proximeter use is mandatory on-site;
- Masks must be worn in all shared spaces at all times, unless seated in a cafeteria or restaurant and consuming food or drink;
- Chairs must not be moved between tables in the cafeterias and restaurants.
- Winter measures for office occupancy:
- Where possible, office occupancy should be limited to one person;
- Where multiple occupancy cannot be avoided, the use of Type I masks is mandatory at all times, even when seated at one’s personal desk;
- Masks should be replaced after four hours of use;
- Windows must be open all day long, with at least 20 cm opening, or opened fully for at least 10 minutes every 2 hours;
- Where compatible with the needs of the service, rotation/teleworking may be done according to the current CERN rules.
- Celebrate the end of the year responsibly.
- COVID vaccination at CERN: Since 9 November, CERN’s COVID-19 vaccination centre is able to vaccinate anyone holding a CERN access card and resident in France or Switzerland including family members of CERN personnel, retirees and contractor personnel. Vaccination is free of charge. The vaccine used is Pfizer-BioNTech.
To sign up for a vaccination at CERN, call the COVID Helpline at +41 22 766 7777. Reservation via PLAMED will be possible from Monday 15 November.
- Measures in France: From 15 December, people aged 65 and over must have a booster dose to extend the validity of their COVID certificates. As of December, boosters will be made available to those aged 50 and over. Furthermore, the wearing of masks in primary schools becomes obligatory throughout the country from Monday 15 November. Full details of the measures in France may be found here.
- Measures in Switzerland: the Swiss Confederation and the cantons have launched a Swiss vaccination week, running from 8 to 14 November to encourage those who have not already done so to get vaccinated. Details are available here. Specific information for Geneva and Vaud can be found here.
- Travel:
- Details of conditions for international travel to and from France are available on the page here. (in French). Please note that some EU countries are subject to reinforced measures for those who are not vaccinated.
Switzerland provides a useful tool to check the conditions of entry that you need to fulfill according to your personal situation, and where you are traveling from: link.
If you are traveling, it is important to make sure you fulfill the requirements of the country you are traveling to before starting your journey. To enter the United States from 8 November, for example, proof of full vaccination is a requirement as well as a negative test: link.

NEWS FROM POINT 2
- 2022 Call for Run Managers candidate for ALICE data taking operations: The Run Manager is a key figure in running the day-by-day operations, supervising the Shift Leaders and the shifters, running the RC Daily Meeting to collect relevant information and to support Run Coordination in defining new RUN 3 data taking and operation procedures. Signup for Run Manager role using the Google Sheet here.
- General Shift Booking for 2022 will open soon.
- Main highlights of this week:
-
- Further analysis of pilot beam data and asynchronous reconstruction in progress.
- ALICE finishes night shifts and global runs. Subsystem intervention continues.
- New features in AliECS and EPN workflow creation under testing
- Global DCS tests are ongoing.
- Power cuts at Point 2: in the coming weeks Point 2 will undergo several electrical interventions that will bring down multiple equipment. Visit guides should be aware of this as well. We expect the Exhibition, the Interactive Window, and/or the Virtual Visits videoconferencing systems to go offline during the following episodes:
- 24/11: the whole of Point 2 will be OFF, access will be impossible (even just for a surface visit).
- 30/11: Exhibition + Interactive Window will be off. The whole of CERN will be touched by this episode (annual auto-transfer test).
- 14/12: Exhibition will remain OFF the whole day.
- LS2 Schedule:
- Global commissioning until 12 November 2021
- There will be a AUG test at Point 2 on 24 November All equipments will be powered off and Point 2 will be inaccessible.
- 11 weeks YETS from 15 November 2021 to 31 January 2022
- Standard interventions on primary infrastructure (cooling, electricity)
- Last chance to work on the detectors (TOF DCDC, MFT VTRx, etc) - Restart global commissioning with magnets on 1 February 2022
- LS2 end date: Monday 21 February 2022 => there will be a delay of the cavern closure because of the buckled RF finger in S23, but there is not yet any official number.
