Applications are invited for two Postdoctoral Research Assistant posts in Particle Physics. The posts are available for a fixed-term duration of 3 years for post 1, and until 31 May 2023 for post 2.
Both positions are on the LHCb experiment at CERN, of which Oxford is a founding institute. The research will be focused on the study of beauty and charm hadrons, through data analysis and the commissioning of the upgraded experiment. Opportunities may also exist for analysis of data from the BESIII experiment in Beijing, and the development of novel detector technologies for a future LHCb upgrade.
The successful candidates will take a lead in LHCb data analysis in one or more of the group's areas of interest (e.g. CP violation measurements or studies of semi-leptonic or rare decay modes of b-mesons), exploiting already collected data from Run I and II, and future data from Run III. They will benefit from the significant physics expertise that exists within the group, and the knowledge of the RICH and VELO detectors, which have a vital role in these analyses. One postholder will also play a key role in the commissioning of the upgraded VELO or RICH detector, and the other will have significant involvement in the Real Time Analysis project. If appropriate, one or both postholders will also contribute to BESIII analysis, and/or become involved in the development of novel detector technologies for a future LHCb upgrade.
Applicants should hold, or be close to completion of, a PhD/DPhil in physics or a related field and ideally a strong background in data analysis and/or detector or software development. They should be confident programming in C++ and python. The candidate will have excellent communication skills, and will have the ability to motivate and guide the work of others, in particular of graduate students. Previous experience in the field of heavy-flavour physics will be an advantage.
The post-holder will have the opportunity to teach.
Informal enquiries about this post may be made to Malcolm John (malcolm.john@physics.ox.ac.uk), Sneha Malde (sneha.malde@physics.ox.ac.uk), Guy Wilkinson (guy.wilkinson@physics.ox.ac.uk).
Please read the “Person Specification and Job Description” before preparing your application. You will be required to upload a Curriculum Vita, a description of research experience and interests and the names and addresses of three referees as part of your online application. In addition you should arrange for the three letters of reference to be sent to sue.geddes@physics.ox.ac.uk by the closing date. Applications are acknowledged but not reference letters.
Only applications received by 12.00 noon on 15 June 2020 can be considered.
