PhD position in milliQan and CMS

We have an immediate opening for a PhD position (4 years) in experimental particle physics at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), in Brussels, Belgium. The candidate should have a master diploma in physics or equivalent at the time of the appointment and demonstrate or aspire an excellent record of activity in experimental HEP.

The research involves on the one hand joining the ongoing construction and commissioning of the milliQan experiment, a small-scale scintillator-based detector near the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) at the CERN LHC. On the other hand, it comprises searching for anomalously charged particles with data from both the milliQan and the CMS experiments. This will happen in connection with a complementary fractional charged particle search with the IceCube experiment.

Travel to CERN to participate in the detector activities is expected, and an involvement in the ongoing construction of the upgraded tracker detector of CMS in the Brussel's lab is also possible.

The Interuniversity Institute for High Energies (IIHE) combines the experimental particle and astroparticle research groups from both Brussels universities, ULB and VUB. It is involved in large international collaborations in particle physics - CMS, milliQan, JUNO, and SoLid - and in high-energy astro(particle)-physics - IceCube, ARA, RNO-G, RET, LOFAR, and Auger. It has important R&D activities in detector development and readout systems, including towards experiments at future colliders, and hosts a CMS Grid Tier2 computing centre. It also comprises a phenomenology group that is active in collider phenomenology but also participates in Virgo/VLK and preparations towards ET. The institute has strong connections to the Belgian community of theorists and phenomenologists.

The review of applications will start on January 31 (extended from Jan 8). Applications should be sent by email - with subject PhD in milliQan/CMS - to Prof. S. Lowette (steven.lowette@vub.be). They should include a detailed CV, a letter of motivation and research interests, and the names of at least 2 referees. The position is open to candidates of any nationality. Applicants are welcomed with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard diversity and promotion of underrepresented groups as a strength and an asset.
