The French-German project CALO5D was recently approved by the French Agence Nationale de Recherche (ANR) and the German Deutsche Forschungsgesellschaft (DFG) for a period of three years.

CALO5D will combine detailed information on particle showers provided by imaging calorimeters (CALO) with precise time information at the cell level, in addition to space and local energy (5D). The exploitation of the information will be assisted by modern machine learning algorithm with the goal to improve the performance of energy reconstruction and particle flow algorithms. The capability of the tools will be demonstrated with performance studies on selected physics channels central to the physics case of future Higgs factories. The results of this project will have a fundamental impact on the design of the next generation high energy physics experiments. To our knowledge, CALO5D will be the first project worldwide to address the application of timing in calorimeters at future Higgs factories in a consistent and coordinated way within a single project.

The project offers several PhD and postdoc positions with durations between two and three years. The places of work will be either Karlsruhe (KIT), Mainz (JGU) or the South of Paris (LLR, Palaiseau, or IJCLab, Orsay). The close collaboration entails frequent travel between the German and French Partners including longer stays at the partner institutes.

For the PhD positions it is expected that the candidates have completed a master or are about to complete a master in particle physics or similar that is recognised by the corresponding graduate schools. In France PhD theses will start on October 1st 2024 and can be preceded by a Master 2 internship at IJCLab. For the postdoctoral positions we expect a PhD degree in particle physics or similar not older than two years.

The salaries commensurate with the laws in France and in Germany for PhD Students and early-career researchers and will include access to social welfare.

The recruitment policy of the project will pay special attention to promote gender balance and diversity. We consider both elements as an asset for the success of the project. We support the goal of increasing the percentage of women in academic positions and strongly encourage female scientists to apply.
