The Department of Science of the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP) in Lima, Peru and its High Energy Physics Group invite applications for a 3-year tenure-track full-time faculty position from outstanding candidates with a strong research record in experimental and/or phenomenological particle physics.

The HEP group at PUCP is the leading particle physics group in Peru and PUCP its top-tier university. We carry out theoretical and experimental research covering a wide range of subjects. This call is aimed for either branch.

The theoretical branch is oriented towards neutrino physics and astroparticle physics. Our current research is focused on heavy neutrino signatures, tests of BSM physics through neutrino oscillations or their interactions. Other topics of interest are the effect of different hypotheses of the galactic magnetic model on the cosmic rays propagation and their correlation with neutrinos, characterization of cosmic ray showers, as well as long-lived particle detection at colliders.

In ALICE, the group has played a crucial role in developing the AD detector system (ALICE Diffractive) and is currently focused on accurately measuring the diffractive cross-section (AD). We have contributed to testing the active pixel sensors of the MFT and developed software for these systems. In DUNE, we aim to incorporate various signatures of BSM neutrino physics into its Monte Carlo simulation and reconstruction. In SWGO we are devoted to energy reconstruction and gamma/hadron separation based on simulations. Our group is also actively involved in conducting low-cost particle detection tests using CMOS technology and GEANT4 simulations. In addition to his/her possible involvement in any of the experiments mentioned before, the experimental candidate is expected to help build the new local HEP lab, thus a background in hardware will be highly considered.

Candidates must have a PhD in Physics or related areas, postdoctoral experience and a proven record of research (e.g. publications in academic journals indexed in Scopus, presentations in conferences, etc.).

The selected candidate will work in the Physics Section of the Science Department at PUCP with major emphasis in research activities within the HEP-group in any of the topics outlined above, including teaching and supervision at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

The expected start date is March 2024.

Requirements:

Candidates are expected to fulfill the following requirements:

Three or more years of postdoctoral experience.

Published articles in academic journals. A competitive rate would be of at least six papers located in the Q1 or Q2 quartiles in the last six years.

Presented works at peer-reviewed international conferences. A competitive rate would be of at least four presentations in the last six years.

Applications should be sent by August 31st, 2023. The following documents are required:

    Curriculum Vitae.

    Scanned degrees.

A Cover Letter (max. 2 pages) addressed to the head of the Science Department, Dr. Francisco Ugarte.

A Research Statement describing past activities, outlining plans for the future, as well as proposing ways to collaborate with the local group (max. 3 pages).

A Teaching Statement describing any past teaching experience, and suggesting how to use research activities towards teaching (max. 3 pages).

    Two Recommendation Letters.

These should be submitted in a single PDF file to Mr. Oscar Chávez (ochavez@pucp.edu.pe) with the subject “Application Physics Tenure Track - LAST NAME”.

The virtual evaluation process will include two seminars (research highlights and future research proposal with a personal interview).

Any questions about the application process should be directed to ochavez@pucp.edu.pe.

Further inquires about the group and research topics can be addressed to Dr. Alberto Gago grupo.altas.energias@pucp.edu.pe
