NEWS FROM POINT 2
- The Year-End Technical Stop ended last week (14 Mar) with the DSO test on Friday.
The machine entered the re-commissioning and powering test phase. The work on the machine is advancing well and the caverns will be closed on 1 April with the machine check-out and the beam re-commissioning. On Thursday morning the handshake test was carried out successfully.
- The preparation at ALICE for the start of the shift operation is ongoing, which will start on Saturday morning. At this point start of COSMICS data taking for alignment will start with the goal to collect 140h.
- On Friday the powering test of the magnet will be carried to check the stability of the power converters and the cooling. During the powering test also calibration runs for detector will be carried out.
- In the mean-time also last work on detector maintenance is ongoing.
- For the central system side, the software update was carried out on Tuesday, during which also a fix for a longer standing issue is with the CCDB connection was fixed.
- New Run Manager (17-30 Mar 2025): Cristian Andrei
Cristian Andrei is a physicist from Bucharest NIPNE. He is a specialist in pion, kaon, and proton production in high-multiplicity pp events, studying the dependence of their production as a function of charged-particle multiplicity and event shape. He is an active member of the PWG-LF, has made significant contributions, and has been a member of several analysis and paper review committees (ARC, IRC). Cristian has substantial experience in data taking and ALICE operation at P2. Since 2016, he has taken up all central shifter positions repeatedly: ECS, DCS, QC, and SL. He has experience in operating ALICE during the previous heavy-ion run period and took several RM terms in the past. Since 2025, he is also the ALICE Training Coordinator.
During his mandate, Cristian will concentrate on the restart of Global data taking after the EYETS, especially the collection of COSMIC data for alignment. We will follow the preparation test for the handshake, the magnet powering, and the finalization of the commissioning phase.
Shifts booking 2025: The booking of shifts is going quite well, but still open blocks are available during the year, especially during the beginning of the shift operation few blocks are available.

JUNIOR'S CORNER
- Message from Junior representatives (Bianca, Florian, Rohaan):
- Following the LHC-wide mental health survey conducted in 2023, which was developed by the ALICE Junior representatives, the ALICE Diversity office and Sarah Speziali, we are happy to announce that the results of the survey are finally analyzed and publicly available as a combined CMS and ALICE public note:
Assessing the mental health state of LHC scientists (ALICE-PUBLIC-2025-001,CMS NOTE-2025/001)
The note contains answers from all four LHC experiments, and was not only limited to junior members of the collaborations. We thank everyone who participated and hope that the note will serve as a basis for future initiatives.
- ALICE Run 3 Analysis Resources: a collection of all resources and news that can be helpful for people engaged in the analysis of ALICE Run 3 data. This is especially beneficial for those new to the Run 3 data analysis.

DIVERSITY
- Work Well Feel Well: Emotions: forces for transformation: Part eight of the Work Well Feel Well series looks at how to acknowledge and manage our emotions!
- 25 by ’25 Gender Diversity Progress:
The latest data shows remarkable progress toward the 25% gender diversity target, originally deemed unattainable by experts due to low staff turnover. We are now less than 0.5% away from the goal! A special thank you to Hiring Managers for their dedication to “conscious hiring” over the past years. With a diverse feeder pool of students and grads, we are optimistic that this will result in increased gender diversity among staff in the medium and long term. More info ....
- D&I Volunteer Networks:
- SNAC (Neurodiversity) Network:
The network, set to officially launch in Q1 2025, already has over 60 members. Recent feedback from a participant highlighted the value of connecting with others who share similar neurodivergent traits.
- Coordinator position open for The Network for persons with Disability:
The role involves acting as a contact point for disability-related questions, participating in Diversity & Inclusion Roundtable meetings, and monitoring projects aimed at improving working conditions for people with disabilities at CERN. Please contact Jean-Yves Le-Meur for more details.
- SNAC (Neurodiversity) Network:
- ALICE Diversity Office website can be accessed here. Your feedback is extremely important. You can send us an email that will be treated confidentially by using the email address: alice-diversity-office@cern.ch or send us an anonymous message by using this form.
