Institutes

On this page you have the list of ALICE institutes presented below by country. The link of the institute's name takes you to the homepage of the concerned institute, the second link takes you to the list of members of the institute registered at CERN (all categories of personnel) and includes people's phone numbers and emails. (Associate institutes are marked with a *)

There are two classes of membership, Member Institutes and Associated Member Institutes.
Each institute is requested to follow a number of guidelines that are common to the ALICE collaboration and defined in the constitution http://alice-collaboration.web.cern.ch/organisation/collaboration/index.html

Membership entitles duties and rights regulated by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
For Members, the MoU is generally an agreement between CERN, as host institute, and the funding agency that represents the institute. In this case, the document should be signed by the representative of the funding agency and the CERN Director for Research and Computing.

For Associate Members, the MoU is an agreement between the institute, represented by the team leader, and ALICE. In this case, the document should be signed by the team leader and by the ALICE spokesperson.

Member and Associated Member institutes shall have access to any and all data taken in the course of operation of the ALICE experiment. Any and all operational resources, as well as all software relevant to ALICE shall be available for every Team Member to review and to use.

Member Institutes have duties that consist of:

  • a minimum initial contribution (generally called entry fee) to the common fund of 50’000 CHF that can be completed in one payment as well as in separate installments.
  • an annual contribution to the Maintenance and Operation Category A (M&O-A) budget and to the ALICE Computing resources. The contribution of each institution or funding agency depending on the funding source for each year is approved at the October Resources Review Board of the previous year and is calculated according to the total budget request and to the number of members of the institution who hold a PhD or an equivalent qualification. 
  • the participation in taking shifts in the running of the experiment. Each year, shift schedules are determined by the Run Coordinator, discussed in the Management Board and allocated to the Member Institutes based on the M&O-A distribution.
  • the participation in the physics analysis of the data.
  • the provision of service work for the Collaboration. In particular, every PhD student should provide a minimum of six months equivalent of service work for the Collaboration before he/she can get a PhD thesis based in any significant way on the ALICE experiment.
