Postdoctoral Researcher in experimental particle physics - ALICE (I)

Nikhef is the national institute for subatomic physics in The Netherlands. At Nikhef, approximately 175 physicists and 75 technical staff members work together in an open and international scientific environment. Together, they perform theoretical and experimental research in the fields of particle- and astroparticle physics. Among the research collaborations Nikhef participates in are the ATLAS, LHCb and ALICE experiments at CERN, the KM3NeT neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean, the VIRGO interferometer in Pisa, the Xenon1T dark matter experiment in Gran Sasso and the Pierre Auger cosmic rays observatory in Argentina. Nikhef also hosts well staffed theoretical physics and detector R&D groups. Nikhef itself is a collaboration between 5 major Dutch universities and the Dutch Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM).

The position
The ALICE group at Nikhef has an opening for a postdoctoral fellow (2 years) in detector development for the ALICE experiment. The fellow will join the ALICE group at Nikhef to work on detector R&D for the upgrade and preparation of the production of the outer layers of the Inner Tracking System (ITS). This upgrade of the existing tracker will be installed during the next long shut-down of the LHC accelerator and is especially important for the detection of charm and beauty hadrons. The physics research program of the Dutch groups focuses on charm and beauty production as well as particle correlations (flow). The candidate will have the opportunity to work part of the time with the Msc and PhD students in the group on analysis of existing data.

Requirements
Candidates are expected to have a PhD in particle or nuclear physics. Experience with particle detector development and operation are desirable. Software skills, especially experience with programming in C++, are an advantage. Good communication skills and the ability to work in an international team are required. Candidates should be willing to travel to CERN frequently in order to report and discuss progress with the ALICE collaboration. The selected candidate should also be able to guide and supervise MSc and PhD students.

Offer
The position is for two years. The candidate will be employed by the FOM-foundation and will obtain the status of postdoctoral researcher. You will receive a competitive salary. The conditions of employment are excellent and include extra months' salary payment in May and December and good travel facilities. The conditions of employment of the FOM-foundation can be found at www.fom.nl.

Information and application
All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply by clicking the 'solliciteer' button below. Please be prepared to upload your curriculum vitae including a brief description of your research interests, and have the email addresses of at least three referents ready, who are willing to send a letter of recommendation on your behalf.
