The ALICE experiment (LHC, CERN), designed to study Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP), is presently under upgrade in order to prepare the next data taking scheduled in 2021. The Muon Forward Tracker (MFT) is part of the new upgrades to be installed. It is a cone-shape telescope build out of silicon pixel sensors of a new kind of technology: MAPS (Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor). Those sensors are distributed on 10 half-disks surrounding the beam pipe and located in front of the frontal absorber of the ALICE muon spectrometer. This new detector will improve highly the spatial resolution of muon tracks at the level of the interaction point. Hence, separation of muons originated from charm and beauty could be separated and also the signal over background ratio will be highly increase. Consequently, the MFT will improve the performances of ALICE but also open new physics program.

SUBATECH is involved in the MFT since its beginning and represents one of the key laboratory in this project. It has in charge all mechanical aspects of half-disks and cone, integration of services, metrology of half-disks, building and assembly of the cone. Presently, the production has started and the final installation in cavern is scheduled in April 2020.

The candidate will contribute firstly to the MFT commissioning either at SUBATECH or CERN. The task would be characterising the disks and checking that they still work fine all along the assembly steps. But mainly, the candidate would have to participate to set tools in order to calibrate and analyse tests using cosmics once the detector will be assembled. In parallel, the candidate will contribute to the design of the physics analysis tools in order to prepare the actual analysis of data which will be acquired in 2021. Therefore, the second part of the PhD will be dedicated to the physics analysis of first data.

This period is an unique opportunity for a young physicist to participate to the commissioning and installation of a High Energy Physics experiment but also to contribute to its starting and to the analysis of its first data. This PhD constitutes a complete training.
