NEWS FROM POINT 2
- Shift booking is open for the whole 2024 run!
- The booking includes 2 periods:
- 19 Feb - 24 Sep 2024: shifts open to any member of the collaboration, reservation via SAMS. It represents 86% of the available shifts.
- 25 Sep - 28 Oct 2024: Heavy Ion shifts, reservation via SAMS restricted to collaborators that have a valid "Expert" permission. If you have experience as central shifter and are willing to commit for this exciting data taking period, but you are not yet identified as Expert for your preferred shift role, do not hesitate to contact the Run Coordination !
- One of the pre-requisites for booking central shifts is to have an ACTIVE SLIMOS permission for the duration of your shifts. The status of all permissions can be checked in the SAMS profile. The SLIMOS permission has to be renewed every 3 years by following the corresponding e-learning course and passing the test, as described here.
- All informations related to shifts and operations are described in the ALICE Operation Website.
- We would like to thank all institutes that already committed to the ALICE operations!
- Several critical blocks are still available, in particular during the first two weeks of operations:
- SL blocks from 4 March to 9 March
- SL blocks from 26 March to 8 April: Stable Beams at injection energy expected during the shift block
- ECS blocks from 26 March to 31 March: Stable Beams at injection energy expected during the shift block
- The booking includes 2 periods:
- ALICE Run Manager (4 - 17 March 2024): Adam Matyja
Adam is a physicist from Cracow and was the PAG coordinator of Ultra Peripheral collisions between 2021 and 2023. He worked for the TPC Krypton calibration in Run 1 and Run 2. In Run 2 he was EMCAL Photon analysis coordinator and worked onEMCAL time calibration. He has a strong experience of central shifts with many central positions covered since the beginning of ALICE Operations.
During his mandate Adam will supervise the restart of machine commissioning, TED and TDI shots, Magnet ramp-up and first beams circulating in the LHC. During this first part of the machine commissioning the experiment will remain SS. Adam will therefore coordinate the validation and final commissioning of all the developments carried out during the YETS. He will supervise the data taking with global SYNTHETIC and REPLAY runs, as well as COSMIC runs whenever the LHC schedule will allow to operate the detectors in nominal conditions.
- YETS 2023-2024:
- P2 operations: The global commissioning and validation of detectors and central systems is continuing. The shift crew is focusing on the global data taking with COSMICS and SYNTHETIC runs. The goal is to benchmark the system and test several new features, in particular the restarting of runs in the same environment and the implementation of non-critical tasks. In parallel the maintenance of detectors is being finalized, before the closure of the cavern at the beginning of March.
- General access to the ALICE cavern will end on 5 March 2024
- LHC beam operations will resume on 11 March 2024
- First stable beams at injection energy are expected around 20 March 2024
- Ongoing: global commissioning of detectors and central systems
