NEWS FROM POINT 2
- hift booking opportunities:
- DCS blocks from April 21 to May 8
Shifts booking via SAMS.
- DCS blocks from April 21 to May 8
- Extension of the 2024 proton-proton run by 4 weeks:
The CERN directorate has recently approved an extension of the 2024 proton proton run by 4 weeks, with a corresponding shortening of the 2025 proton-proton run by 4 weeks as well. The overall beam allocation for 2024+2025 will remain the same for both proton-proton and heavy-ions collisions. As a consequence of the extension, the 2024 heavy-ion run will be shifted by 4 weeks. The number of heavy-ions days will remain unchanged with respect to the original schedule. - The new shift schedule, with the additional proton-proton shift blocks as well as the shifted heavy-ion period, will be opened to the whole collaboration on Wednesday 17 April at 13:00 CET.
- ALICE Run Manager (15-21 April 2024): Livia TERLIZZI
Livia is a junior member of the collaboration from the Torino group and an expert on Resistive Plate Chambers. She worked on the MID upgrade for RUN3 with new bakelite electrodes and worked on the performances of MID during the first year of data taking. She is one of the ALICE representatives of the eco-gas collaboration of CERN. Since 2023 she is also the MUON System Run Coordinator, and she is in charge of both MID and MCH systems. She has a very large experience in ALICE operations, as she ensured several central shifts as well as three Run Manager blocks in the past years.
Livia will coordinate the last steps of the LHC intensity ramp-up, during which we will collect high-rate data for TPC and TOF calibration, and we will perform the final commissioning of the experiment in preparation for the collisions at 500 kHz with full machine.
- LHC and P2 news:
- LHC intensity ramp-up:
The LHC has entered the intensity ramp-up phase, with the first collisions at 6.8 TeV delivered as early as Friday 5 April. This week the machine has completed the scrubbing run and successfully collided beams with to 400 bunches. The intensity ramp-up will further progress during the weekend, were we expect to reach 800 bunches. - P2 operations:
ALICE is successfully collecting data with all detectors. During the current intensity ramp-up phase the experiment is carrying out an intense program of detector calibrations and special runs, in preparation for the physics production at full machine. During the initial fills at 6.8 TeV we performed the alignment of the muon spectrometer, collected calibration data for ITS, PHOS and TRD, and we completed the initial step of the interaction rate scan for TPC and TOF.
Apart from the special runs, we also collected physics data at a pile-up of ~0.05, with a data-taking efficiency that was systematically above 95%.
