NEWS FROM POINT 2
- Shift booking opportunities:
- SL Block: 22 June to 27 June
- SL Block: 4 July to 9 July
Shifts booking via SAMS.
- ALICE Run Manager (27 May - 9 Jun): Sanchari Thakur
Sanchari is a post-doc at the Bose Institute, Kolkata, India. She is mostly active in physics data analysis. In particular, during her PhD at the Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC, Homi Bhabha National Institute), she investigated two-particle correlations in PbPb collisions. She has studied the nearside jet-like yield with pion and proton-triggered correlation in the intermediate pT range to see the effect of the quark coalescence and radial flow in the particle ratio in heavy ion physics. In Run 2 she was already involved in operations at Point 2 by taking PMD on-call and DQM shifts. This year she has taken central shifts for all the roles (QC, DCS, ECS, and Shift Leader) over the past three months, and she is now fully trained and qualified to start her first Run Manager mandate.
During her mandate, Sanchari will supervise the production of proton-proton physics at 500 kHz, focusing on efficient data taking and the best possible data quality. The second week will be partly devoted to the second LHC machine development period when we will have the opportunity to focus on software deployment and dedicated system tests.
- LHC and P2 news:
- LHC:
During the past week, the LHC has focused on proton-proton physics production, spending a bit more than 50% of the time in Stable Beams. The machine experienced two long interruptions, one due to a quench in sector 23 during the past weekend, and the second on Monday due to a communication issue with the cryogenics system in sector 12. Moreover, the SPS started an intervention yesterday to replace one dipole magnet. The intervention is expected to be completed today at noon. The LHC was able to bridge most of the SPS downtime with a 22-hour-long fill, that was dumped this morning to allow a short access to the machine and experiments.
LHC successfully completed the Van der Meer scan program for all experiments. Proton-proton physics production will resume this afternoon and will continue until the start of MD2 on 5 June.
- P2 operations:
ALICE has smoothly and successfully collected proton-proton physics data at 500 kHz interaction rate over the past week, with an average efficiency above 90%. The total delivered luminosity for physics runs is now exceeding 11 pb-1.
