NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS
Social media enthusiasts and bloggers: Here is your chance to cover Quark Matter 2025 in Frankfurt for ALICE presentations! We would like to encourage you to take pictures of ALICE talks and poster sessions, write a few lines about those, and send them to alice-outreach@cern.ch. We plan to share these through ALICE social media channels and upload them to the CDS photos archive! Your help would be highly appreciated. NEWS FROM POINT 2
- The repair of the cooling leak in ATLAS could be finished successfully during the last weekend. The closing of ATLAS started beginning of the week and is expected to be finished till Monday 7 April. During this period the machine checkout will be carried out (excluding ATLAS) and will be finalized on till the 8 April including ATLAS.
- The first beam in the LHC are expected on 8 or 9 April.
During the machine checkout, the tests of the transfer line will be carried out on Friday 4 April.
- Preparation in ALICE:
- ALICE cavern was patrolled last Monday and is closed since Wednesday for the machine checkout.
All maintenance activities by the detector could be finished. - Some issue appeared during the last days, most of them could be fixed before and the cavern closure.
- Due to CERN-wide power glitch on Thursday several LVPS of TRD required an intervention in the cavern, which could be carried out directly in the shadow of machine checkout after the power glitch. During this access also an issue in MCH data and a LV as well as gas leak, which appeared during closing and could not be fixed before Wednesday, were fixed.
- During the machine checkout the recording of cosmics data is continuing. So far more then 210h of cosmics data were recorded for alignment.
- ALICE cavern was patrolled last Monday and is closed since Wednesday for the machine checkout.
- This week Adam Matyja started his term as Run Manager (31 Mar - 13 Apr):
Adam is a physicist from Cracow. He was the Physics Analysis Group (PAG) coordinator of ultra-peripheral collisions (UPC) between 2021 and 2023. He worked for the TPC Krypton calibration in Run 1 and Run 2. In Run 2 he was EMCAL Photon analysis coordinator and worked on EMCAL time calibration. He has a strong experience in central shifts with many central positions covered since the beginning of ALICE Operations. During the last year, he did already Run Manager terms.
During his mandate, Adam will supervise the restart of machine commissioning, and likely the first beams circulating in the LHC. During this first part of the machine commissioning the experiment will remain Super Safe (SS). Adam will therefore coordinate the validation and final commissioning of all the developments carried out during the YETS. He will supervise the data taking with global SYNTHETIC and REPLAY runs, as well as - until the restart of beam commissioning - COSMIC runs for additional statistics for alignment.

- Message from Junior representatives (Bianca, Florian, Rohaan):
- Following the LHC-wide mental health survey conducted in 2023, which was developed by the ALICE Junior representatives, the ALICE Diversity office and Sarah Speziali, we are happy to announce that the results of the survey are finally analyzed and publicly available as a combined CMS and ALICE public note:
Assessing the mental health state of LHC scientists (ALICE-PUBLIC-2025-001,CMS NOTE-2025/001)
The note contains answers from all four LHC experiments, and was not only limited to junior members of the collaborations. We thank everyone who participated and hope that the note will serve as a basis for future initiatives.

DIVERSITY
- Work Well Feel Well: Emotions: forces for transformation: Part eight of the Work Well Feel Well series looks at how to acknowledge and manage our emotions!
- 25 by ’25 Gender Diversity Progress:
The latest data shows remarkable progress toward the 25% gender diversity target, originally deemed unattainable by experts due to low staff turnover. We are now less than 0.5% away from the goal! A special thank you to Hiring Managers for their dedication to “conscious hiring” over the past years. With a diverse feeder pool of students and grads, we are optimistic that this will result in increased gender diversity among staff in the medium and long term. More info ....
- D&I Volunteer Networks:
- SNAC (Neurodiversity) Network:
The network, set to officially launch in Q1 2025, already has over 60 members. Recent feedback from a participant highlighted the value of connecting with others who share similar neurodivergent traits.
- Coordinator position open for The Network for persons with Disability:
The role involves acting as a contact point for disability-related questions, participating in Diversity & Inclusion Roundtable meetings, and monitoring projects aimed at improving working conditions for people with disabilities at CERN. Please contact Jean-Yves Le-Meur for more details.
- SNAC (Neurodiversity) Network:
- ALICE Diversity Office website can be accessed here. Your feedback is extremely important. You can send us an email that will be treated confidentially by using the email address: alice-diversity-office@cern.ch or send us an anonymous message by using this form.
