The Department of Physics at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a postdoctoral researcher in the area of Ultra-Peripheral Collisions (UPCs) in high-energy nuclear interactions. The research effort will be divided evenly between the ALICE Collaboration at the CERN Large Hadron Collider and the JETSCAPE Collaboration. The research will be carried out in close collaboration with members of the Relativistic Nuclear Collisions Program (RNC) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). The appointment will be for two years with the possibility of extension for a third year, depending upon performance and availability of funding.

The JETSCAPE effort will focus on UPC physics modeling and the development of associated software to probe the partonic structure of nuclei at low Bjorken-x, utilizing the new CSCAPE framework that is being developed for a broad range of low-x studies.  The ALICE effort will focus on data analysis, with emphasis on UPC-based observables. The group is currently investigating photoproduction of open charm and dijets in UPCs, with a continuing interest in measuring exclusive final states.

Candidates should have a recent PhD in physics or astronomy, with experience with data analysis in a large experiment. Experience with large-scale advanced computing, with fluency in C++, ROOT, and/or Python, is essential for this position. Experience with Bayesian Inference and associated Machine Learning approaches is advantageous for this position.
