A new milestone for ALICE computing!
The University POLITEHNICA Bucharest (UPB) has been officially recognised as a new WLCG Tier-1 site for the ALICE experiment. In the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid, CERN acts as Tier-0, where LHC data first arrive. Tier-1 centres around the world then play a crucial role in storing, processing, reprocessing, and preserving large shares of the data, making them available to physicists for analysis.
Becoming a Tier-1 site is much more than a technical upgrade. It reflects years of reliable operation, expertise, and sustained commitment, and it means taking on a central responsibility in the ALICE data chain. Crucial to this achievement is RoEduNet (the Romanian NREN), which provides the high-speed 100Gbps network link connecting the site directly to CERN.
