Postdoctoral Research Assistant on the LHCb Pixel Detector Project
Particle Physics, Denys Wilkinson Building, Keble Road, Oxford
Grade 7: £29,541 - £36,298 p.a.
The subdepartment of Particle Physics, University of Oxford is seeking a highly qualified researcher to work on the development of CO2 microchannel cooling for the vertex detector at the LHCb upgrade. LHCb will be the first experiment to use such cooling, so this post offers an exceptional opportunity to drive this subject.

The focus of this post will be on the development, and validation of microchannels containing a bi-phase CO2 coolant. The postholder will later devise the qualification of the microchannel plates as part of the LHCb module fabrication. This calls for a person with demonstrable laboratory and/or hardware testbeam experience. The candidate should be willing to travel to CERN or similar European facility and fully participate in testbeams and their data analysis with the purpose of qualifying the thermal performance with pixel chips. Furthermore there should be opportunity to work with graduate students on physics data analysis as well as the simulation of the LHCb pixel detector.

The post is a full-time appointment until March 2016. A possible extension depends on satisfactory progress and future funding. The candidate should hold a doctorate in particle physics or equivalent experience in a field directly related this technology. Teaching duties of up to 3 hours/week during University term may be required.

Please read the "Person Specification and Job Description" before preparing your application. You will be required to upload a CV, a description of research experience and interests. Please arrange for two letters of reference to be sent to Sue Geddes, email: s.geddes@physics.ox.ac.uk by the closing date. Informal enquiries should be addressed to Malcolm John, email: m.john@physics.ox.ac.uk.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on 31 October 2013.
