NEWS FROM POINT 2
- Optimisation for greater success (and new challenges): Accelerator report in the CERN Bulletin (12 Oct 2023) by Rende Steerenberg:
Experts from the ALICE experiment and the LHC machine collaborated closely to tackle the issue of background noise in the ALICE detector: many different remedial strategies were studied and tested during several fills over a period of more than 30 hours. Finally, the correction of residual dispersion (see the box below) reduced the background noise to a satisfactory level for ALICE to take physics data in the coming weeks.
These graphs from the ALICE ZDC show the level of background noise before and after the correction of the residual dispersion. The peak in the middle represents the level of beam signal.
- LHC in production mode with full machine, fills of ~ 5h going from 45-47 kHz to 10kHz at dump
- ALICE efficiency from 50% to 90%. Consolidation work ongoing to tackle all issues.
- 0.8 inverse nanobarn delivered to ALICE

JUNIOR'S CORNER
Message from Junior representatives (Carolina, Florian, Luca):
- Juniors’ Day, 19 October: During the upcoming ALICE week at CERN we invite you all to join the Juniors’ Day happening in the afternoon of Thursday, 19 October, both at CERN and online. The afternoon program will be followed by the Juniors’ Dinner in R1!
- Guidelines for ALICE Thesis Video: we like to propose a ~3 min video summarizing the key results of PhD thesis. Guidelines are in the Juniors link. As an example: Thesis video by Hannah Bossi is in the CDS link.
- LHC Early Career Mentoring Program: We are happy to announce the start of the fourth round of the LHC Early Career Mentoring Programme for junior and senior researchers at the LHC!
The programme aims at connecting experienced researchers from an LHC experiment with early career researchers who seek for advice about how to develop their professional skills and want to learn from the expertise of an experienced LHC researcher. For more information on the scope of the programme, please check out the homepage of the program.
If you are interested in the programme, either as mentor or as mentee, make sure to apply here. Applications are open until October 22nd, 2023.
After applying, mentors and mentees will be matched by the Early Career Mentorship Committee and they will work on meeting their own specific set of goals, as proposed by the mentee and agreed upon with the mentor. The mentorship will continue until the end of August 2024, after which point mentor-mentee pairs may continue to meet informally if they wish to do so.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email the organisers at LHC-Early-Career-Mentorship-Committee@cern.ch.
- LHC Job Matching Event, 24 October 2023: Looking for your next position in HEP? Apply to the LHC Job Matching Event (JMEv) Fall 2023, registration to the event is currently open!
The LHC job matching event offers the opportunity for job recruiters and seekers, who both currently work on LHC experiments, to meet in Zoom interview sessions. The event is organised by the LHC Early Career Scientist Fora (LHC ECSF). Please find all further information and the registration details here.

DIVERSITY
- Mental health support: In light of World Mental Health Day on 10 October, whose overall objective is to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilise efforts in support of mental health, CERN’s Medical service and psychologists invite you to three interactive sessions to learn effective and useful tools to better deal with stress:
- Flash disconnection, Wednesday 11 October
- Cardiac coherence, Wednesday 18 October
- Self-evaluation tool, Wednesday 25 October
- "Work well feel well: No, no… it’s OK… Developing an awareness of health indicators": While a healthy amount of stress can provide motivation and drive, when work commitments are high, stress can negatively impact our health. It's essential to put measures in place to protect our health from the harmful effects of chronic stress.
This is the first of a 12-part Work Well Feel Well series, with articles to be published every two months.
