NEWS FROM POINT 2
- Shift booking opportunities:
- SL partial block from Saturday April 7 to Wednesday April 10
- DSC blocks from April 21 to May 8
- ECS block from May 9 to May 14
Shifts booking via SAMS.
- Extension of the 2024 proton-proton run by 4 weeks:
The CERN directorate has recently approved an extension of the 2024 proton proton run by 4 weeks, with a corresponding shortening of the 2025 proton-proton run by 4 weeks as well. The overall beam allocation for 2024+2025 will remain the same for both proton-proton and heavy-ions collisions. As a consequence of the extension, the 2024 heavy-ion run will be shifted by 4 weeks. The number of heavy-ions days will remain unchanged with respect to the original schedule. - The new shift schedule, with the additional proton-proton shift blocks as well as the shifted heavy-ion period, will be opened to the whole collaboration on Wednesday 17 April at 13:00 CET.
- ALICE Run Manager (1-14 April 2024): Maciej Marek CZARNYNOGA
- LHC and P2 news:
- LHC commissioning: The LHC commissioning is reaching the final stages. A second fill with stable beams at injection energy was provided on 1 April. In parallel the machine has finalised all the commissioning steps required to declare the first collisions in stable beams at 6.8 TeV, which are expected today afternoon. This will mark the beginning of the intensity ramp-up at top energy.
- P2 operations: on 1 April, ALICE collected more collisions at 450 GeV, with all detectors successfully participating into the data taking. During the rest of the LHC commissioning activities the experiment remains in a safe state, and the central acquisition is constantly monitored by replaying MonteCarlo-generated data as well as real data from 2023. The experiment is ready for the start of the LHC intensity ramp-up, during which ALICE will carry out a challenging and crucial program of detector calibrations and interaction rates scans.
