NEWS FROM POINT 2
- Shift booking opportunities:
- SL block: 7th August to 12th August
- SL block: 11th August to 16th August

- ALICE Run Manager (22 Jul - 24 Jul): Ernesto Calvo Villar:
Ernesto is a Ph.D. student from Lima working on the measurement of diffractive cross sections using the AD system in ALICE. He performed service tasks on the design and production of the AD detector by studying the performances of the detector using Monte Carlo simulations. In Run 2, he was involved in the operation at Point 2 by taking ECS and AD shifts. Ernesto did the RM package last year and returns this year again doing a RM block.
During his mandate, Ernesto will take care about the continuation of pp physics production at 500 kHz with the full machine (2400b). - LHC and P2 news:
- LHC:
During the past week, the LHC has provided stable beams for proton-proton physics during more than 50% of the time. The operation was interrupted with two issues in the injectors. On Friday, a problem in the SPS vacuum resulted to a longer downtime. On Monday, a trigger of the emergency power off required a longer recovery, lasting till the late evening.
Apart from this LHC could provide nice and mostly long fills. The physics production will continue over the weekend and during next week. An access is planned for the next week. The exact day will be scheduled.
- P2 operations:
ALICE continues to collect good physics data with at high efficiency, regularly above 95%. On Sunday a new efficiency record with 99.86% could be achieved. On Monday evening the solenoid tripped twice due to a faulty thyristor bank in the power converter. Due to this, ALICE had to stay safe till Tuesday midday, when the faulty part was replaced. Afterwards ALICE resumed physics data taking. The fault was independent of the water leak in the cooling system. The fixed leak did not show any sign of degradation.
With the current magnet polarity (+/+) , which is set since the technical stop the recorded integrated luminosity in physics fills is currently of about ~6 pb-1 (total for both polarities: ~21 pb-1)
