- ALICE Run Manager (14 Oct - 27 Oct): Michal Broz
- LHC and P2 news:
- LHC:
During the past week, the LHC carried out the planned MD5 activities, followed by the second Technical Stop of the year (TS2). Unfortunately, the MD5 has been severely affected by various issues with the machine, mainly related to the magnets Quench Protection System (QPS). Hence, only a fraction of the planned tests have been completed successfully.
The TS2 took place between Monday and Wednesday and was followed by an extra day of stop to complete the replacement of a cryogenic compressor in Point 6. The beam operations have been resumed on Thursday evening, with the final beam commissioning for the proton-proton reference run and some anticipated commissioning of the lead beams.
After three days of beam commissioning until the end of the weekend, the proton-proton reference run will finally start next Monday (28 October 2024)! Currently, the reference run is scheduled to last 6 days, until Saturday, November 2nd. The first days will be devoted to a short-intensity ramp-up and the van der Meer scans, followed by about 4 days of physics production at the full machine.

- P2 operations:
ALICE has performed the final software upgrades and hardware maintenance during the MD5 and TS2 periods, and is fully ready for the start of the heavy ion period. During the technical stop, a repair of the power converter for the dipole magnet also took place, following a fault on Friday (18 Oct) evening that lead to a trip of the magnet. The dipole has been successfully ramped up and tested after the repair, and is fully back in operation.
ALICE will remain nearly off during the final beam commissioning phase, except during a test of the Pb beam background that will take place during the weekend. During this critical measurement, the ITS, FIT, MFT, and ZDC detectors will collect some precious data that will provide an early assessment of the beam background levels with the 2024 LHC optics. The results will be discussed with the machine operators and, if needed, further mitigation measures will be studied during the reference run and implemented in the final commissioning of the Pb beams.
The ALICE control room is animated by a great excitement for the approaching start of the heavy ion run, with all the shifters and system experts on the starting blocks, ready to ensure the best possible data taking for the p-p reference and Pb-Pb runs!
