NEWS FROM POINT 2
- ALICE Run Manager (11 - 24 Nov): Michal Broz
- LHC and P2 news:
- LHC:
After completing the Pb-Pb van der Meer scans of all experiments between Friday and Saturday, the LHC resumed the intensity ramp-up, reaching full machine in the night between Saturday and Sunday. During the first fills, the peak luminosity was still kept below the target of 50 kHz hadronic collision rate. The strategy of the machine is to gradually increase the beam intensity while monitoring the losses and the eventual radiation-induced instabilities. After few fills with stable operation, the bunch population was increased by about 25% on Tuesday, resulting for the first time in a levelling of more than 1 hour at 50 kHz in ALICE in fill #10358. Unfortunately the fill was then dumped due to a SEU-induced quench in point 8, that required several hours of recovery, during which the electronics board that triggered the quench has been replaced with a more radiation-hard version.
The machine operations resumed in the night between Wednesday and Thursday, with similar good performances. After some hours devoted to a planned machine development on Thursday, the physics production will continue for the rest of the week.

ALICE has successfully started the physics data taking with Pb-Pb collisions. During this week the ALICE data acquisition and processing system has coped for the first time with a sustained collision rate of 50 kHz, proving to be stable and reliable even in those challenging conditions.
All detectors have been routinely included in the data taking, except for few hours on Sunday were the Muon Identifier had an issue with the gas distribution, that was quickly fixed by the gas experts. At this high collision rates, some detectors are experiencing a somewhat higher frequency of data corruptions and readout hiccups, which are usually promptly detected and fixed, such that they do not impact the quality of the collected data. Nevertheless, the detectors are exhibiting a remarkable stability even during the levelling at the nominal luminosity.
So far the LHC has delivered about 0.6 /nb to ALICE. Provided that the luminosity production will continue smoothly during the next days, we plan to invert the magnets polarity next Monday and collect data in the negative field configuration until the end of the Pb run. The polarity switch will be followed by a short intensity ramp-up, during which we will collect some low interaction rate data for the calibration of the TPC charge distortions.
