NEWS FROM POINT 2
- Open shift block: In the upcoming month there are two open SL block (4 – 9 June, 12 -17 June)
- LHC and ALICE:
- During the last week, the intensity ramp continued with the finalization of the 75b during the weekend and 400b on Tuesday and Wednesday night. In between, the scrubbing campaign was carried out to prepare for higher intensities. After some problems during the first scrubbing period, the scrubbing was much smoother in last week.
- The first will with 800b is expected on Friday afternoon.
- During the weekend, the 1200b fills are planned. Physics production is expected to start beginning of the upcoming week.
- During the 75b fill, the data taking for TPC low-rate distortion maps could be carried. In the second fill, data with magnet field off were taken successfully for alignment of the muon spectrometer and central barrel. During the 400b fill system test at nominal interaction rate were carried to prepare for the start of physics production, to also confirm the required number of EPNs for physics production.
- In the next fills, ALICE will carry out test at Pb-Pb equivalent rate, including tests with low solenoid field.
- Run Manager (12 - 25 May): Rafael Angel Narcio Laveaga:
Rafael is a PhD student in ALICE from Instituto Tecnológico de Culiacán – TecNM, Mexico. He joined ALICE in 2016 as a bachelor’s student while in Sinaloa. He holds a degree in mechatronics engineering (from Universidad Politécnica de Sinaloa) and a master’s in physics (from Universidad Autónoma de Sinaloa). He specializes in detector design, development, and testing. During Run 2, he worked with the AD detector team and contributed to the FDD proposal between 2016 and 2020. In 2023, he joined the FIT project, where he is analyzing the performance of the FDD detector and its aging. He has also taken part in test beams for the MID detector for ALICE 3. His PhD work focuses on developing plastic scintillators for future detectors and comparing light collection techniques.
Rafael has extensive experience in ALICE central shifts, having covered all positions, and has also served as on-call for FIT. He has been involved in science communication projects in his home state, Sinaloa.
During his mandate as Run Manager, he will oversee the second part of the intensity ramp-up, including the detector special runs and the start of physics production.

DIVERSITY
- Work Well Feel Well: Emotions: forces for transformation: Part eight of the Work Well Feel Well series looks at how to acknowledge and manage our emotions!
- 25 by ’25 Gender Diversity Progress:
The latest data shows remarkable progress toward the 25% gender diversity target, originally deemed unattainable by experts due to low staff turnover. We are now less than 0.5% away from the goal! A special thank you to Hiring Managers for their dedication to “conscious hiring” over the past years. With a diverse feeder pool of students and grads, we are optimistic that this will result in increased gender diversity among staff in the medium and long term. More info ....
- D&I Volunteer Networks:
- SNAC (Neurodiversity) Network:
The network, set to officially launch in Q1 2025, already has over 60 members. Recent feedback from a participant highlighted the value of connecting with others who share similar neurodivergent traits.
- Coordinator position open for The Network for persons with Disability:
The role involves acting as a contact point for disability-related questions, participating in Diversity & Inclusion Roundtable meetings, and monitoring projects aimed at improving working conditions for people with disabilities at CERN. Please contact Jean-Yves Le-Meur for more details.
