NEWS FROM POINT 2
- Open shift block:
- two open SL block (2– 7 June, 12 - 17 June), which still need to be covered. In case of questions please contact RC (alice-rc@cern.ch)
- LHC and ALICE:
- During the last week, machine finalized the intensity ramp-up and started pp physics production with fill machine.
The operation was interrupted by a cern-wide power glitch on Saturday morning, which required some lower recovery, and a replacement of an SPS magnet on Monday and Tuesday.
Otherwise, the production went very well and LHC carried out several long fill.
The plan for the upcoming week is to continue physics production.
- ALICE continued to take data for physics at 500kHz visible interaction rate. The data taking efficiency was very good, resulting in 3.08/pb recorded luminosity ( 3.12/pb delivery luminosity).
In the upcoming week, the data taking will continue. Also, some further studies are planned to be carried out to study the TPC Field Cage at high-rate pp.
- During the last week, machine finalized the intensity ramp-up and started pp physics production with fill machine.
- Run Manager (25 May - 8 June): Maximilian Korwieser:
Maximilian (Max) is a Ph.D. student at the Technical University of Munich. He joined the ALICE collaboration in 2017. During his bachelor’s thesis, he reconstructed Sigma⁰ hyperons for femtoscopic studies. Since then, he has specialized in data analysis using femtoscopy techniques to investigate hadron emission and interactions in small systems. His Ph.D. research focuses particularly on vector meson–nucleon interactions, with an emphasis on ρ⁰–proton correlations. He is also involved in the QC effort for the TPC.
This RM mandate is his first. He followed the Run Manager training, taking central shifts for all the roles (QC, DCS, ECS, and Shift Leader). During his mandate, he will supervise pp physics production.

- Early-career researcher input for the European Strategy for Particle Physics: hybrid event on Tuesday, 27 May (1.00–4.00 p.m. CEST) to explore and discuss these recommendations and to reflect together on how to move forward as a community. The event is open to all, regardless of career stage or affiliation. We warmly welcome your participation and input.
- Following the LHC-wide mental health survey conducted in 2023, which was developed by the ALICE Junior representatives, the ALICE Diversity office and Sarah Speziali, we are happy to announce that the results of the survey are finally analyzed and publicly available as a combined CMS and ALICE public note:
Assessing the mental health state of LHC scientists (ALICE-PUBLIC-2025-001,CMS NOTE-2025/001)
The note contains answers from all four LHC experiments, and was not only limited to junior members of the collaborations. We thank everyone who participated and hope that the note will serve as a basis for future initiatives.

DIVERSITY
- Work Well Feel Well: Emotions: forces for transformation: Part eight of the Work Well Feel Well series looks at how to acknowledge and manage our emotions!
- 25 by ’25 Gender Diversity Progress:
The latest data shows remarkable progress toward the 25% gender diversity target, originally deemed unattainable by experts due to low staff turnover. We are now less than 0.5% away from the goal! A special thank you to Hiring Managers for their dedication to “conscious hiring” over the past years. With a diverse feeder pool of students and grads, we are optimistic that this will result in increased gender diversity among staff in the medium and long term. More info ....
- D&I Volunteer Networks:
- SNAC (Neurodiversity) Network:
The network, set to officially launch in Q1 2025, already has over 60 members. Recent feedback from a participant highlighted the value of connecting with others who share similar neurodivergent traits.
- Coordinator position open for The Network for persons with Disability:
The role involves acting as a contact point for disability-related questions, participating in Diversity & Inclusion Roundtable meetings, and monitoring projects aimed at improving working conditions for people with disabilities at CERN. Please contact Jean-Yves Le-Meur for more details.
