  • Congratulations to Jamie Norman for being awarded the prestigious Ernest Rutherfold Fellowhip by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). More info here!

    Quoting Jamie:  "I am thrilled to be awarded this prestigious fellowship and to be launching this exciting research programme at the University of Liverpool.

NEWS FROM POINT 2

  • Open shift block:
     
    • There are currently 4 non-expert full blocks (plus two additional days for ECS on August 19th and 20th in the afternoon) and 6 expert (1 full/5 partial) blocks.

  • LHC and ALICE:
     
    • During the last week, LHC provided pp collisions at full machine. The vacuum issues resulting in the appearance of spikes in the ALICE background is still being investigated.
       
    • On Friday night ALICE solenoid tripped, and was eventually recovered on Monday morning. Since then, ALICE has been taking physics data at 500 kHz. The access originally planned for Friday was eventually anticipated to Thursday afternoon for an issue with a cryo compressor in Point 8. During the access, ALICE granted interventions in the cavern to FDD, ITS, MID for ALICE3 and TOF.
  • Run Manager (4 - 17 Aug): Wenhui Feng:

    Wenhui is a PhD student from Central China Normal University, China. She is actively involved in physics data analysis in Run 3. During her Master's studies, she worked on jet background subtraction and jet QC. Currently, she focuses on the measurement of charged-particle jet yields and the nuclear modification factor in Pb-Pb collisions. This year, she has taken central shifts for all the roles (QC, DCS, ECS, and Shift Leader) over the past three months, and she is now fully trained and qualified to start her first Run Manager term.
     
    During her mandate, she will oversee the pp production period at 500 kHz with the magnets in negative/negative configuration.

  • EDIT 2026 Instrumentation School at CERN , 3 March, registration deadline 1 October: EDIT (Excellence in Detector and Instrumentation Technologies) is a series of schools aimed at young researchers, including graduate students and early-career postdocs, who seek to deepen their knowledge of detector technologies and instrumentation for particle physics.
