Commissioning and Physics Analysis with the Mu3e Detector at PSI
Deadline on Jun 1, 2026
Job description:
The Institute for Particle Physics and Astrophysics (IPA) at ETH Zurich (http://www.ipa.phys.ethz.ch/) seeks applications for graduate student positions dedicated to the Mu3e experiment (https://www.psi.ch/de/mu3e) being commissioned at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). Mu3e searches for the charged lepton flavour violating decay μ → eee with unprecedented sensitivity. The successful candidate will contribute to the detector commissioning phase and play a central role in early physics analyses using data collected in 2026 (commissioning) and 2027 (physics production data taking). The group is responsible for the Scintillating Fiber (SciFi) timing detector whose commissioning will be the first priority in 2026. The project offers hands-on experience with a state-of-the-art precision timing detector and direct involvement in one of the leading rare-decay searches worldwide. The institute has also a strong involvement in the CMS experiment at CERN as well as in R&D in monolithic pixel detectors for future detector applications.
We are seeking highly motivated candidates at the M.Sc level, preferably with prior research experience in Experimental Particle Physics and good academic standing, and a keen interest in detector development and data analysis. Programming experience (preferably Python or C++) and enthusiasm for collaborative research in an international environment are further assets.
Candidates will actively participate in the teaching activities of the Physics Department (approximately 20-25% of the level of effort). The initial term of the position is 18 months, during which an aptitude colloquium must be passed in accordance with the doctoral ordinance of ETH Zurich. The position is funded for up to four years based on mutual satisfaction and sufficient progress. Interested candidates should submit their applications by 1 June 2026, along with a letter of motivation, names and contact details of two referees, and a curriculum vitae as well as an academic transcript, via email to ipa-cms-phd@phys.ethz.ch. Recommendation letters will be solicited from the provided contact information as appropriate and should not be submitted with the application dossier.
For inquiries about the position only (not application), please contact Prof. Rainer Wallny (rainer.wallny@phys.ethz.ch) and/or Dr. Marius Snella Köppel (mkoepp@phys.ethz.ch) (please mention “ETHZ Mu3e PhD:” in the subject line). The anticipated start of the contract is 1 September 2026, or later upon mutual agreement.
