Magnet door

The massive doors of the ALICE experiment magnet had been open since the beginning of 2019 to allow for major detector upgrades. The delicate operation of the closing of the doors took place last week. The magnets (solenoid and dipole) are being ramped up to allow the first re-commissioning test under magnetic field. ONGOING AND UPCOMING EVENTS

NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • CERN is currently  COVID-19 LEVEL 2 – Yellow.
Level 2 measures are in the link here.

  • ALICE Secretariat is now open 5 days per week.

  • Prior to accessing the CERN site:

    • CERN COVID-19 Training Course (Learning Hub): all newcomers coming on the CERN sites have to pass a compulsory COVID-19 Health and Safety Measures at CERN training course in order to access the CERN sites.

    • Sign the CERN COVID-19 Self-Declaration:   English and French
All newcomers coming on the CERN sites must sign a form to declare that they have read and understood the current COVID-19 related access restrictions in force at CERN. Please read the accompanying Instructions.

    • All those who have a Proximeter should use it, particularly in the restaurants. If you do not yet have a Proximeter, you should arrange to collect one using this link. The use of Proximeters is very useful in contact tracing, and therefore limiting spread of the virus.

  • Return from a high risk zone: CERN list of countries with quarantine requirement is in the link here. if you are returning to the CERN local area from any country/region considered as high risk for COVID-19: use the form here and contact CERN service desk.

  • Update on the COVID19 Guidelines: https://hse.cern/covid-19-information

Frequently Asked Questions: COVID FAQ page.

  • Level 2 measures meet the desire of many members of the CERN community to come back on site.

  • Compliance with COVID-19 measures during level 2 - Yellow

    - it is very important that everyone on site scrupulously follows the applicable Health and Safety measures designed to prevent transmission.
    - where appropriate, people are also encouraged to participate in testing campaigns offered by CERN.
    - CERN will not request proof of vaccination to work on site.

CERN strongly encourages people to get vaccinated if they can.

  • Self-testing at CERN: The e-learning module explains how to register. Once registered, you will be able to enroll on-line for a saliva self-test using the Plamed tool.

While testing is recommended for everyone, with a frequency of one test every two weeks at the moment, it is particularly recommended to make use of the service immediately on return from vacation.

  • Vaccination certificates: The EU digital COVID certificate is recognised across the EU and EFTA countries. The Swiss COVID certificate has been interoperable with the EU’s since 9 July.

  • Evolution of COVID-19 cases at CERN can be found here.

  • Measures in France:
As of 9 August, a COVID certificate (passe sanitaire “renforcé”) becomes mandatory in cafés, restaurants, hospitals, retirement homes, medical and social institutions and some shopping centres, in addition to cultural and leisure centres bringing together more than 50 people. It is also required for air travel, and for trains and buses for long-distance journeys.

The COVID certificate will not be required for restaurants and cafeterias at CERN.

Details of the measures in France can be found in the links: here and here.

  • Measures in Switzerland:
Current measures in Switzerland are detailed in the links here and here. Information for people travelling to Switzerland is available here. You are encouraged check the entry conditions for Switzerland that apply to your specific case using the tool, and to contact your airline before your flight.

Please note that people arriving or returning from a country/area for which Switzerland and/or France impose a mandatory quarantine upon arrival or return must not come on to the CERN site for the duration of the quarantine imposed by France or Switzerland whichever is the longest. Those concerned shall declare their situation via the TRAMED tool and inform their supervisor.

OUTREACH NEWS

  • CERN has been gradually opening to visitors. The Microcosm exhibition and public activities in the Globe have restarted. At the moment, no group guided tours are taking place; restarting will be assessed in September, depending on how the public health situation evolves.

  • ALICE underground visits: are now open to people having a valid CERN access card, with a limited number of visitors, and in respect of special COVID rules.

  • ALICE Virtual Visits: are announced in the official CERN catalogue. A list of open virtual visits is announced in the Visits link.

ALICE needs volunteers for virtual as well as underground visits. Virtual visits require having 2 or 3 guides. If interested, please get in touch with  alice-visits, or alice-outreach-virtual-visits
