Several shift blocks open in October and November (pp and HI period)
Shifts booking via SAMS.
- LHC and P2 news:
- LHC:
The LHC successfully completed the MD4 tests during the weekend and on Monday, with excellent machine availability. The last fill of the machine development was dumped on Tuesday around 1 am, to prepare for the access for the VIP visits on Tuesday morning, related to the 70th CERN anniversary celebrations.
The machine restart after the VIP visits has been quite complicated, with faults detected in several beam line elements and control systems. Stable beams were finally declared on Wednesday morning around 7:30 am. However, this first fill lasted less than three hours and was followed by about 7 hours of downtime due to RF and cryogenics issues before resuming physics production in the evening. On Thursday the LHC inserted a fill for the commissioning of the anticipated proton-proton reference run and then provided a long physics fill during the night.
After a short planned access on Friday morning, the physics production will resume until the start of MD5 on October 17th, which will mark the end of the p-p 13.6 TeV physics production in 2024.
- P2 operations:
ALICE remained in the super-safe state during the MD4. On Monday we performed the periodic software upgrade, as well as some expensive tests of the data acquisition with the full EPN farm, in preparation for the heavy ion data taking. Tuesday morning has been very busy day at P2, with many delegations visiting the experimental cavern and the LHC tunnel near ALICE.
The physics data taking was restarted with the magnets in positive field configuration, to equalise the statistics with the opposite orientations, and will continue until the next MD5 block.
