NEWS FROM POINT 2
- ALICE Run Manager (11 - 24 Nov): Michal Broz
- LHC and P2 news:
- LHC:
The physics production progressed very well during the weekend, with a daily luminosity production close to 0.2 nb-1. The operations have been interrupted on Monday morning to invert the polarity of the ALICE magnets, followed by a short access and the validation fills for the new magnets configuration. The validation included one short fill at low intensity, after which the machine resumed physics production at nominal intensity.
After three fills at full machine the LHC experienced another large quench on Wednesday in the early morning, that required about 20 hours of recovery. The production then resumed on Wednesday night and will continue until Sunday at 4am.
The last day of the run will then be devoted to a planned machine development, during which the machine will perform the annual quench test with beam.

ALICE is collecting physics data quite smoothly, with an average data taking efficiency above 85%. So far we recorded an integrated luminosity of about 1.4 nb-1 in physics fills at full machine, and we are approaching the statistics collected in 2023. New TPC calibration data for the negative magnets polarity have been collected in the low-intensity fill at the beginning of the week, thus completing the set of special runs needed for the characterisation of the space charge distortions in Pb-Pb collisions.
In the night between Thursday and Friday we also collected some additional data for the study of the beam-induced background in the ITS. Thanks to the expertise of the LHC operators, at the end of one fill it has been possible to dump only one of the two beams, and collect some special data with only Beam2 circulating in the machine. This provided precious indications on the origin of the current ITS background. While the residual background has a marginal impact on the ITS performances for physics, the understanding of its origin and propagation is important in view of future upgrades. Another test with Beam1 will be organised before the end of the run, to complete the measurement.
Apart from those tests, ALICE plans to collect as much physics data as possible in the remaining days!
The 2024/25 EYETS will start on Monday morning. The magnets will be switched off and the cavern will be opened for normal access to start the maintenance activities.
